Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) R&D and Training at GTI
LNG—natural gas that has been chilled to the point of becoming a liquid—has advantages for shipping and storage because of its high energy density. It is emerging as an important energy resource throughout the Atlantic Basin(pdf 1 MB).

LNG is one of the world's most rapidly growing fuels. It accounts for 21% of all gas imports and exports, and serves nearly 6% of total natural gas demand. In the United States, LNG is emerging as an important supplemental source of fuel to meet growing natural gas demand.

GTI is pursuing a variety of research and education programs on LNG, ranging from the safe siting and operation of LNG plants, to the compatibility of LNG with gas from other sources.

Information and Training Resources
GTI is a leader in LNG information and training.
Its publications are essential sources of information for anyone involved in the LNG business:
Training and Professional Development Programs
GTI also offers courses that cover all aspects of LNG markets and technology, from baseload and peakshaving operations, to shipping and contracts. Each year, we offer Fundamentals of Baseload LNG: Markets, Technology, Economics—a popular course that fills up quickly. We also offer Understanding LNG Terminals and Terminal Operations: A Critical Link in the LNG Chain. Both courses feature site visits to area facilities.

LNG PLANT OPERATOR TRAINING
This widely used GTI training and certification program is available to train individuals and as an annual company site license. See details and a link to a sample of the course at LNG Plant Operator CD Training. We also offer customized classroom training for your operators and supervisors. Use our training materials with your own in-house training staff, or let GTI bring our expert faculty to your facility. Contact us at education@gastechnology.org.

SHIPPING AND CARGO HANDLING — CD and eLearning
LNG Shipping and Cargo Handling is available for purchase on CD-ROM or on the Internet at GTI's eLearning site. See what the course covers and find out how you can try a free sample of the course online.

Oil & Gas Journal's LNG Observer Gas Technology Institute is pleased to be cooperating with Oil & Gas Journal in the revival of The LNG Observer, a magazine published by GTI between 1989 and 2001 and now a quarterly supplement to Oil & Gas Journal—the energy industry's leading information source. Colleen Sen is contributing editor. Each issue provides in-depth articles on LNG industry issues, trends, forecasts, and technologies; project updates; and valuable statistical data.

GTI is an official sponsor of the International Conferences on LNG and has published the Proceedings from LNG-1 to LNG-15. LNG 16 will be held in Algeria, April 18-21, 2010.

Use of Liquefied Natural Gas

In addition to its research on LNG as a contributor to U.S. energy supply, GTI also is conducting several R&D programs directed at the use of LNG in various applications.

One significant issue is the degree to which LNG can replace or be intermixed with natural gas from other sources. LNG typically has a higher heating value per cubic foot compared to U.S. pipeline-quality natural gas. A recent GTI study on LNG interchangeability—focusing on residential appliances—provides useful information on this important subject. GTI is now seeking participants for a related evaluation of LNG use in industrial burners and turbines (pdf 58 kB).

Other GTI research projects related to LNG use are evaluating the following:
