Today, GTI Energy announced that the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations has selected all three hydrogen hubs in which GTI Energy is an administrator or partner to begin award negotiations for the development of the HyVelocity Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub, the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) and the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen (MachH2) Hub. With the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law investment, each hub is poised to deploy hydrogen at scale and deliver energy and economic benefits to surrounding communities.

The DOE’s Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs) will kickstart a national network of clean hydrogen producers, consumers, and connective infrastructure while supporting the production, storage, delivery, and end-use of clean hydrogen. Funded by President Biden's Investing in America agenda, the H2Hubs will accelerate the commercial-scale deployment of clean hydrogen—helping generate clean, dispatchable power, create a new form of energy storage, and decarbonize heavy industry and transportation. Together, they will also reduce 25 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from end-uses each year—an amount roughly equivalent to combined annual emissions of 5.5 million gasoline-powered cars—and create tens of thousands of good-paying jobs across the country while supporting healthier communities and strengthening America's energy security.

GTI Energy brings its deep expertise and unwavering commitment to hydrogen technology research and development, five decades of hydrogen technology deployment initiatives, and long legacy of collaborative public-private leadership skills to the regional clean hydrogen hubs. GTI Energy is committed to prioritizing community engagement while supporting energy and environmental justice, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in an effort to further the Biden Administration’s landmark Justice40 goals through the creation of the H2Hubs.

“We are excited to take part in DOE’s historic investment in scaling the hydrogen economy and providing jobs and cleaner air to communities across the U.S.,” said Paula Gant, PhD, President and CEO, GTI Energy. “At GTI Energy, we believe energy transitions require cross-industry collaboration, and we are proud to innovate and work with industry leaders and community partners to make real the tremendous economic potential of clean hydrogen hubs.”

“GTI Energy’s participation in driving hydrogen’s role in the broader energy system is a demonstration of our commitment to decarbonizing key sectors of our economy and enabling access to clean energy for our communities,” said Kristine Wiley, Vice President, Low Carbon Energy Solutions, GTI Energy. “Deploying hydrogen at commercial scale will unlock market potential and opportunities for building out necessary infrastructure needed for a national hydrogen network.”

HyVelocity Hub: Texas and Southwest Louisiana

The HyVelocity Hub, an industry-led hub administered by GTI Energy, will leverage the world’s largest concentration of existing hydrogen production and end-use assets in Texas and Southwest Louisiana to deliver the benefits of clean hydrogen and good-paying jobs to local communities. HyVelocity is led by seven core industry participants -- AES Corporation, Air Liquide, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Mitsubishi Power Americas, Orsted, and Sempra Infrastructure – and consists of a wide array of partners, including its key organizing participants, The University of Texas at Austin, Center for Houston’s Future, Houston Advanced Research Center, and Port Houston. Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2): Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia

GTI Energy is a member of the ARCH2 Executive Board, and a key contributor to ARCH2 serving as a member of the Program Management Office team led by Battelle Memorial Institute. ARCH2 is a regional hub bringing together private industry, state and local government, academic and technology institutions, non-profits, and community organizations across the Northern Appalachian region. ARCH2 will leverage diverse regional resources to build a safe, sustainable clean hydrogen hub that can scale and integrate into a national clean hydrogen network. Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen (MachH2): Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin

GTI Energy is a participant of MachH2, a multistate alliance of public and private entities representing every phase in the hydrogen value chain. MachH2 aims to create an immediately scalable hydrogen hub in the Midwest that deploys the region’s abundant carbon-free energy to create a clean hydrogen economy and reduce emissions across multiple heavy emitting sectors.
