Gas Technology Institute (GTI), based in Des Plaines, IL, and ClassNK, based in Tokyo, Japan, are pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) laying out a framework for cooperation in developing education, training, and research for both the maritime and small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry.
GTI is a leading U.S. research, development and training organization serving energy and environmental markets, focused on increasing energy supply, improving energy delivery and using energy more efficiently and in a cleaner manner. ClassNK is a leading ship classification society engaged in a range of ship-related activities and services aimed at promoting the protection of human life and property at sea, as well as protection of the marine environment.
The organizations have aligned interests and areas of focus, and will partner on the development of a full slate of LNG fueling training materials and course offerings, related research projects, and construction of an LNG bunkering simulator that can be used for training all stakeholders.
Says GTI Vice President of Corporate Development Ron Snedic, "GTI is very excited about working alongside such a pioneering and highly respected classification society. ClassNK shares our goal of engaging in activities that focus on the safety all along the LNG value chain and a commitment to environmental stewardship."
"Our goal is to support the safety of ships from not only the technological point of view, but also the human factor perspective. The need for qualified seafarers who are familiar with the latest maritime technology is essential for the sustainable development of the shipping industry," says ClassNK Executive Vice President Koichi Fujiwara. "GTI not only has the specialized knowledge to address these issues, but also has rich experience in LNG training. I am sure that this collaboration will contribute to a greater understanding of LNG as well as help address number of other matters relating to small-scale LNG."
"GTI is a recognized expert and industry leader in the gas industry, but this will be the first time we have teamed with a major ship classification society. As we work together on development of training standards for LNG fuel vessel and terminal personnel, GTI will have an opportunity to leverage our subject matter expertise along with our experience in training to serve a new market," notes Snedic.
