Former GTI Director Nominated by Obama to be Energy Secretary

03/06/13 Des Plaines, IL

President Obama earlier this week nominated Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) physicist Ernest Moniz to be the next Secretary of Energy, replacing Steven Chu.

Ernest Moniz is the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems, Director of the MIT Energy Initiative, and Director of the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment at the MIT Department of Physics. He served as Under Secretary of the Department of Energy from 1997-2001 and as Associate Director for Science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President from 1995-97.

Moniz is also a former Gas Technology Institute (GTI) Board member, serving the organization from May 2002 until April 2006. Notes David Carroll, GTI President and CEO, "I congratulate Dr. Moniz on his nomination. He has great energy expertise, and will serve the country well as the new Secretary of Energy."

"New technologies and technical insight are needed to meet critical energy challenges and environmental issues, shaping our energy future. With Dr. Moniz’s leadership of the MIT Energy Initiative—linking science, innovation and policy to help transform global energy systems—I am confident that factual data and sound science will drive enlightened policy development."

GTI served as an Advisory Committee Member on an interdisciplinary MIT study, chaired by Moniz and issued in mid-2011, titled The Future of Natural Gas. The study called natural gas a bridge to a low-carbon future, and positioned it as an abundant, domestic, affordable, and clean solution.

Among the study's highest level of recommendations was “to maximize the value to society of the substantial U.S. natural gas resource base.” Adds David Carroll, “Dr. Moniz is well prepared to fulfill this recommendation, and will provide a portfolio of energy options to ensure the economy has the resources needed for growth and a secure, sustainable future.”
