Expanding Production and Use of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)

GTI Energy’s research projects, analysis, and expertise are focused on overcoming the technological issues surrounding the expanded production and use renewable natural gas (RNG). Our experts are familiar with regulations and incentives driving the production, sale, and use of RNG.

GTI Energy is designing gasification and methanation plants for large-scale production of RNG from forest and agricultural wastes. Full life cycle assessments are being documented for the production of this storable form of renewable energy. The work provides technical and economic bases for conversion or diversification of biopower and forest products plants into RNG producers.

GTI Energy led a team of engineers and scientists to produce a blueprint for converting an existing biomass power plant in Stockton, California, into an RNG production site, using the wood waste feedstock and some of the existing infrastructure. In addition to providing data about the process technologies, the integrated plant, and production costs, the study highlights the many environmental benefits and confirms the ability to produce large quantities of low-carbon RNG for use in all energy sectors.

The engineering design study, Low-Carbon Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) from Wood Wastes, was funded by several West Coast utilities, California Air Resources Board, and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District to better understand the value, benefits, and cost of utilizing wood wastes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
